Some schools are dropping driver's ed to cut costs

Beginning driver Ashley Crawford grips the worn gray steering wheel and warily begins maneuvering the 1999 Ford Escort through a set of bright orange traffic cones outside Killian Senior High School. She considers herself lucky: Because of budget cuts, many schools around the country are leaving driver's ed by the side of the road. They are cutting back on behind-the-wheel instruction or eliminating it altogether, leaving it to ugg outlet parents to either teach their teenagers themselves or send them to commercial driving schools. "If my parents would have taught me, it would have been different," said Ashley, a 16-year-old sophomore. "When I drive, they try to tell me what to do, and I get nervous." Some educators and others worry that such cutbacks could prove tragic. "As soon as people start taking driver's education away from the kids, we're going to pay for it with lost lives, collisions, and ultimately that costs everybody," said John Bolen, past president of the Florida Professional Driving School Association. Some worry also that many parents can't afford the $350 to $700 that private lessons can cost or don't have the skills to teach their kids themselves. Even for those who can do it, the combination of parents, teenagers and learning how to drive can be volatile. In more than half the states, minors who want a license must UGG Classic Argyle Knittake driver's education from a certified instructor, said Allen Robinson, CEO of the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association. However, that doesn't necessarily mean schools are required to offer a class. (Generally, after age 18, would-be drivers do not have to undergo any formal instruction.) High schools started rolling back driver's ed after their effectiveness was called into question in the 1980s. The more recent cutbacks have been driven by school funding shortages, and the trend might be accelerating because of the downturn in the economy, said J. Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Robinson said the nation's schools have all but eliminated driver's ed as an elective course offered during the school day. Here in Miami-Dade County, the nation's fourth-largest school system got rid of driver's ed during the day at all but Killian and another school. Students can still enroll in a free after-school course at one of the district's adult education centers. But that is not an option for the many thousands of students who play sports or are involved in other extracurricular activities, or cannot get a ride. About 10 high schools in Georgia eliminated or reduced UGG Classic driver's education this school year. A dozen more did the same in Kansas last year. In Volusia County, Fla., schools eliminated daytime driver's ed three years ago, replacing it with summer, after-school and Saturday classes. Enrollment plummeted two-thirds, saving about $400,000 a year. "This is not because they don't believe in driver's ed," said Bob Dallas, director of the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety. "They do, but they're facing the same financial pressure that everybody in government is facing." In rural Pennsylvania, the Titusville district got rid of the behind-the-wheel portion of its program last spring, saving about $20,000. In Blountville, Tenn., the driver's education program was cut in half about five years ago because of budget woes. Administrators considered eliminating the $130,000-a-year program last spring, but did not. "It could save lives. It's very simple," said Jack Barnes, director of schools in Sullivan County, Tenn. "We don't want any of our students injured or killed because of mistakes they made that possibly a program like this could help." Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of UGG Sandals death for U.S. teens; in 2007, an average of 11 16- to 19-year-olds died every day. But Russ Rader, a spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, said studies show there is no difference in crash risk between 16- and 17-year-olds who take driver's ed and those who don't. "In some cases, driver's education has a negative effect because in some states you can get a license sooner if you take driver's ed," he said. Private instructors aren't necessarily picking up all the students who can't take driver's ed at school. Julio Torres, an instructor at the Easy Method Driving School in Miami, said he suspects the downturn in the economy is playing a role. He also said some parents simply prefer to teach their kids. But Torres and others said parents, despite their best intentions, ugg bootsaren't always the best instructors. For one thing, they may pass their own bad driving habits on to their children. Also, "the kids are at a stage where they're confrontational with their parents," said Brenda Bennett, owner of a driving school in Erie, Pa., that holds contracts to teach driver's ed through some area high schools. "Then you add driving with a parent and you have more confrontation. Whereas someone like myself, when we take kids out, there's no personality going there. It's just all business." Bad economy hits 'real' housewives

Peculiar things have been happening this season on "The Real Housewives of Orange County." Gretchen Rossi had a garage sale, Jeana Keough went shopping with her daughter at H&M and Tamra Barney is now doing her own housework. What? This is a dramatic turn from season three when Barney's husband gave her a diamond Rolex for her 40th birthday, Vicky Gunvalson debated over buying a yacht (she decided against it) and Rossi's fiance gave her a Harley. "All of them have been very much affected by the economic ugg outlet situation," explains the show's executive producer, Douglas Ross. This means the downsizing we're seeing on camera is not just for show. A number of the cast members were involved in real estate that's been on a downslide the past two years. And this season, we'll see Lynne Curtin's family get evicted from their Laguna Beach home. "We try to treat it as gently but as honestly as we can," Ross says. "We happened to have been there with our cameras ... as part of our normal schedule when they were served the eviction notice. It's one of those great reality TV moments that happened to be caught because we were in the right place at the right time." Money is a sensitive subject and some people — even reality TV stars — may not want to expose their financial struggles to millions of people. But the housewives don't seem to mind sharing — they even fancy themselves as an inspiration to others in similar situations. "It helps people across the nation because they realize it's not just them," says Keough. Barney says the exposure is just her being honest. "I'm pretty open. ... There's not too much I'll hide. UGG Classic Cardy Boots It was difficult for my husband ... but the world's in this place right now and I think people are going to relate to it," she says. So far it looks like Barney is right. Ratings for the fifth season have been strong and average about 2 million viewers an episode. This could partly be due to the popularity of the "Real Housewives" franchise in general, which has taken off thanks to over-the-top versions of wig-pulling, table flipping and incredulous statements from women in Atlanta, New Jersey and New York, like, "I'm up here, you're down here." Their actions make viewers ask, "Are they for real?" Perhaps this season we're finally getting the answer: Yes, they are. While "The Real Housewives" are compensated for appearing on the show, Keough says it's not enough to support a family. "It's so minimal. It's not enough to make your house payments. It's more like a location fee to keep your house clean." Keough only filmed three episodes of season 5 and then opted out of the rest — she said she wanted to focus on her real estate career and her family. Not all the Orange County ladies are having a hard UGG Classic Tall Boots time paying their bills, though. Self-professed workaholic Gunvalson says her insurance business is doing better than ever. And she proudly reveals she's 42 and on target to retire comfortably at age 55. "When I first started (on the show), I was working out of the house with two employees and now I have a huge office with 10 employees, 700 agents out in the field," she says. Then there's new cast member Alexis Bellino, 32, who has three children and two nannies. On a recent episode, her husband gave her a 7 carat diamond necklace, just because. This season, there have been some inconsistencies to the ladies' money woes. Curtin allowed herself to be filmed getting a face lift while her daughter got a nose job. Her husband, Frank, acknowledged the cost of the procedures on camera but said his family's happiness was more important. Despite the eviction, Lynne Curtin says her finances are improving and predicts her family will be able to build a house next year. "My husband is a builder in Southern California. It's not like he doesn't try. He's not sitting at home watching TV. He is going out and making an effort. ... I've been married for 20 years. ... We've had the high life we've had the low life. It's just reality."
Dems consider dropping Medicare expansion

The end game at hand, Senate Democrats appeared ready to jettison a proposed Medicare expansion from sweeping health care legislation Monday in a bid to remove the largest remaining obstacle in the way of Christmas-week passage of the measure. "Democrats aren't going to let the American people down. We all stand shoulder-to-shoulder," Majority Leader Harry Reid said after a closed-door meeting called to discuss last- minute trade-offs in the legislation that President Barack Obama has made a top priority. Liberals had sought the Medicare expansion as a last-minute substitute for a full-blown, government-run insurance program that moderates insisted be removed from the legislation. But it drew strong opposition ugg bootsfrom Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and quieter concerns from a dozen Democrats — all of whom hold votes essential for passage. Reid did not say flatly that Democrats had decided to drop the proposal for uninsured Americans as young as 55 to purchase coverage under Medicare. But several senators said it appeared inevitable. And with all Democratic senators invited to meet with Obama at the White House complex on Tuesday, that appeared a prime opportunity for him and them to declare their unity. "Put me down tonight as encouraged about the direction these talks are going," Lieberman said less than 24 hours after he rattled Democrats with his threat to join Republicans who oppose the bill unless he got his way. "Our job is to govern," said Sen. Tom Carper, giving voice to a UGG Classic Cardy Boots theme that Democrats have struck all year as they pursued their improbable goal of overhauling the nation's health care system. The overall measure, costing nearly $1 trillion over a decade, is designed to expand coverage and ban the insurance industry practice of denying coverage on the basis of pre- existing medical conditions. Obama also has urged Congress to slow the rate of growth in health care spending nationally, and several days after Reid submitted a package of revisions, lawmakers awaited final word from the Congressional Budget Office on that point.
Pakistan PM says South Waziristan offensive over

The Pakistani army has finished its offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan, but may soon pursue militants in another part of the lawless tribal belt along the Afghan border, the prime minister said Saturday. Yousuf Raza Gilani's suggestion of an operation in Orakzai tribal region is another sign that Pakistan did not deal the death blow it had intended against the Taliban by taking them on in their main base. It also illustrates the intractable nature of the extremist challenge facing this nuclear-armed nation: Even as troops flood one militant stronghold, the insurgents can regroup in another stretch of the rugged, barely governed tribal districts. The conundrum comes amid U.S. pressure on Pakistan to crack down on militants on its territory, although to Washington's chagrin Islamabad has focused on the groups that threaten its citizens rather U.S. and NATO forces across the border ugg boots in Afghanistan. "The operation in South Waziristan is over. Now there are talks about Orakzai," Gilani told reporters in televised remarks from the eastern city of Lahore. He did not give a timeframe or any other details. Pakistan's army launched a ground offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan in mid-October, saying it was determined to terminate its No. 1 internal enemy from its most forbidding stronghold. But the operation prompted a slew of retaliatory suicide and other bombings nationwide that have killed more than 500 people, attacks that have continued even as the military's battlefield activities have slowed down in South Waziristan. Many of the Taliban fighters in South Waziristan are believed UGG Classic Cardy Boots to have fled to North Waziristan and Orakzai. The latter has been the home base for Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud. In recent weeks, the military has launched several airstrikes against militant targets in Orakzai. Such airstrikes could be a prelude to a ground offensive, just as they were in South Waziristan. Some 40,000 people are estimated to have fled Orakzai in the weeks since the South Waziristan offensive began, the U.N. said in a statement Friday. Spokesmen for Pakistan's powerful military did not UGG Classic Tall Boots immediately respond to requests for comment on the prime minister's statement. In the past, the military officials have been hesitant to put a time frame on how long troops will stay in South Waziristan even after major operations end. That region also has witnessed a civilian exodus. Orakzai is a smaller tribal region, covering roughly 600 square miles (1,538 square kilometers). It is sandwiched between the Khyber and Kurram tribal region and does not directly border Afghanistan. Although the U.S. has applauded Pakistan's pursuit of the Pakistani ugg online Taliban, American officials have also expressed hope that Islamabad will also pursue other militant groups who are more directly focused on attacking Western troops stationed in Afghanistan. Pakistan has reached peace agreements with some of those groups — including a major one led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur in North Waziristan — so that it can attack the Pakistani Taliban fighters without interference. It shows no sign of making any moves against militants whose top priority is battling the U.S. and NATO.

httpPresident Barack Obama says the nonviolence practiced by such leaders as Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. should be a guiding force. In a speech Thursday as he formally accepts his Nobel Peace Prize, the president says their pacifism may not have been practical or even possible in every circumstance. But he says the love they showed and their faith in human progress must always be a guiding force. The White House released excerpts of Obama's speech shortly before he was to speak at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony at city hall in Oslo, Norway. The Nobel committee announced in October that Obama had won the prize in ugg boots recognition for his aspirations to reshape U.S. relations with the world. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. OSLO, Norway (AP) — A wartime president being honored for peace, Barack Obama said Thursday that criticism of his Nobel prize as premature might recede if he advances goals such as a nuclear-free world and tackling climate change. But, he added, proving doubters wrong is "not really my concern." "If I'm not successful, then all the praise in the world won't dUGG Classic Short Boots isguise that fact," said Obama from this chilly, damp Nordic capital where he is picking up his Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee announced Obama had won the peace prize in October when he wasn't even nine months on the job, recognizing his aspirations to reshape the way the U.S. deals with the world much more than his actual achievements. "It was a great surprise to me," Obama said after meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. "I have no doubt that there are others who may be more deserving." Adding fresh irony to the award, Obama announced just days before coming here to formally accept it that he is ordering 30,000 more U.S. troops into war in Afghanistan. Debate over that decision followed the president to Norway, where he told reporters that that the July 2011 date he set for the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan to begin will not slip — but that the pace of the full drawdown will be gradual and conditions-based. "We're not going to see some sharp cliff, some precipitous drawdown," Obama said. None of this has gone unnoticed, with peace activists staging a protest to coincide with the Nobel ceremonies. The president's motorcade arrived at Oslo's high-rise government complex to a few dozen anti-war protesters gathered behind wire fences nearby. Dressed in black hoods and waving banners, the demonstrators banged drums and chanted anti-war slogans. "The Afghan people are paying the price," some shouted. Greenpeace and anti-war activists planned larger demonstrations later that were expected to draw several thousand people. Protesters have plastered posters around the city, featuring an Obama campaign poster altered with skepticism to say, UGG Classic Tall Boots "Change?" Stoltenberg defended Obama as a Nobel laureate. "I cannot think about anyone else who has done more for peace during the last year than Barack Obama," Stoltenberg said at Obama's side. "I think it's a very bold and important decision." In awarding the prize to Obama, the Nobel panel cited his call for a world free of nuclear weapons, for a more engaged U.S. role in combating global warming, for his support of the United Nations and multilateral diplomacy and for broadly capturing the attention of the world and giving its people "hope." The list of Nobel peace laureates over the last 100 years includes transformative figures and giants on the world stage. They include heroes of the president, such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and others he has long admired, like George Marshall, who launched a postwar recovery plan for Europe. So the choice of Obama was such a surprise, and derided so loudly by UGG Tasmina Braid Sandals some critics as premature, that the Nobel committee took the unusual step of defending itself. Obama seemed to try to distance himself from that debate. "On a whole host of initiatives that I've put forward this year, some of which are beginning to bear fruit, the goal is not to win a popularity contest or to win an award — even one as esteemed as the Nobel Peace Prize," he said. "The goal is to advance American interests." Obama's Nobel speech — a tradition billed as the winner's lecture for the world — will explore his thinking about war, security and the pursuit of peace. He is likely to spell out the role of American leadership and the responsibilities of all nations. Obama was considering lots of ideas for the speech and had been expected to winnow them into a final draft on his flight. Obama's first stop in Oslo was the Norwegian Nobel Institute, where UGG Sundance II Boots the Nobel committee meets to decide who gets the prestigious prize. After signing the guest book at the Institute with a lengthy passage, Obama told reporters he had penned thanks to the committee members and noted the pictures of former winners filling the wall, saying that many gave "voice to the voiceless." In the evening, Obama is expected to wave to a torchlight procession from his hotel balcony and stroll with Norwegian royalty to a dinner banquet. He will offer comments a second time there and cap his brisk jaunt to Europe. The president and his wife, Michelle, arrived here in the morning after an overnight flight from Washington, coming off Air Force One holding hands and smiling. Obama was due back in Washington by midday Friday — skipping the second day of Nobel festivities. Obama's quick stopover miffed some in Norway, but reflects a White House that sees little value in trumpeting an honor for peace just nine days after Obama announced he was sending more troops off to war. Asked if Obama was excited about the award, national security aide UGG Classic Cardy Boots and speechwriter Ben Rhodes responded, "I think he feels as if it places a responsibility upon him." "It's the company that you keep as a Nobel laureate that I think makes the deepest impression upon him," said Rhodes, who was helping craft the president's speech. "That kind of adds an extra obligation to essentially extend the legacy." The Nobel honor comes with a $1.4 million prize. The White House says Obama will give that to charities but has not yet decided which ones.

Tarique Rahman, BNP senior joint secretary general and elder son of Khaleda Zia now under-going treatment in London in a pre-recorded video speech aired at the BNP’s fifth national council on Tuesday said, he is still undecided about his direct involvement with party activities. ‘It will depend on overall situation and my health,’ he said. “A blueprint was made to kill me during the so-called caretaker government, but by the mercy of Allah and blessings of my parents and countrymen I was narrowly saved”, he added. Tarique said he was asked to leave the country during the state of emergency. As I did not escape, I had been implicated in false charges and face torture.” Tarique said the country is now passing through a ‘crucial period’. “My father (late president Ziaur Rahman) sacrificed his life for the country. My mother is still working hard for the country and its people.” “I could choose a secure life. But I did not. I worked for the welfare of people,” he said. UN climate chief: hacked e-mails are damaging

COPENHAGEN – The U.N.'s top climate official on Sunday conceded that hacked e-mails from climate scientists had damaged the image of global warming research but said evidence of a warming Earth is solid. In an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the U.N. climate summit starting Monday, Yvo de Boer said the e-mails pilfered from a British university fueled skepticism among those who believe the science is manipulated to exaggerate global warming. "I think a lot of people are skeptical about this issue in any case," de Boer said. "And then when they have the feeling ... that scientists are manipulating information in a certain direction then of course it causes concern in a number of people to say 'you see I told you so, this is not a real issue.'" E-mails stolen from the climate unit at the University of East Anglia appeared to show some of world's leading scientists discussing ways to shield data from public scrutiny and suppress others' work. Those who deny the influence of man-made climate change have seized on the correspondence to argue that scientists have been conspiring to hide evidence about global warming.ugg outlet "This correspondence looks very bad," de Boer said. "But I think both the university is looking into this (and) I believe there is a police investigation going on whether the e-mails were leaked or stolen." De Boer noted that the head of the U.N.'s expert panel on climate change, Rajendra Pachauri, had also announced that he would investigate the matter. De Boer defended the rigorous review process by some 2,500 scientists of climate change research as solid and thorough. "I think this is about the most credible piece of science that there is out there," he said. Climate negotiators and world leaders from 192 nations are meeting in Copenhagen in the next two weeks, seeking to agree on an all-encompassing package to combat global warming and help its victims. A key issue is cutting the greenhouse emissions that scientists say are to blame for the warming in average global temperatures observed in recent decades. U.S. climate negotiator Jonathan Pershing called the science on global warming "very robust, very substantial." He told the AP that the controversy surrounding the leaked e-mails came at an "unfortunate" time, just before the long-awaited U.N. talks, "but has no fundamental bearing on the outcome." "Many of us have been exposed to those kind of events" where e-mails have been unintentionally published, he said. "All of us are adults. all of us are aware that there are consequences to writing e-mails, that the Internet is a very fluid place." Climate skeptics meeting in downtown Copenhagen for a panel discussion organized by a Danish nationalist party said the leaked e-mails highlighted the limitations of global warming research. "There has been a lot of this kind of activity going on, there has been suppression of view points," said Roger Pielke, Jr., a professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado.cheap ugg Negotiators in Copenhagen are trying to set targets for controlling emissions of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases, including by the leading contributors, China and the United States. They will also seek agreement on how much rich countries should pay to help poor nations to deal with climate change. "Those are the two key issues," de Boer said. "And if those can be unlocked I think the rest will come together as well." De Boer said he didn't think the conference would fail because key nations have already made pledges on emissions and financial assistance — even though they are still short of what experts say is needed.ugg sales "It's going to be two weeks of thorough negotiation to try and get the ambition level up and to get the financial specifics on the table," de Boer said. ______

Senate Republicans forced Democrats to vote in favor of cutting billions from providers of home care for older people as partisan debate flared Saturday during a rare weekend session on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Obama planned to travel to Capitol Hill on Sunday to help Democrats resolve internal disputes that stand in the way of Majority Leader Harry Reid bringing the 10-year, nearly $1 trillion legislation to a vote. Ahead of his visit, Republicans, bent on making Democrats cast politically risky votes, offered their third amendment in the debate so far showcasing more than $400 billion in cuts to projected Medicare spending that would pay for the bill, winter ugg boots mostly for subsidies to help extend coverage to millions of uninsured. Like the other two, this one went down to defeat, on a vote of 53 to 41. The measure by Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., would have eliminated $42 billion in cuts over 10 years to agencies that provide home health care to seniors under Medicare. Four moderate Democrats joined all Republicans present in voting for the amendment: Sens. Jim Webb of Virginia, Evan Bayh of Indiana, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Underscoring the pressures on the moderates, Lincoln, who faces a difficult re-election next year, initially cast a "no" vote with the Democratic majority but switched to "yes" in the course of the 15-minute vote. Republicans accused her of flip-flopping, but Lincoln said later that she changed her vote after considering how important home health care is to Arkansas. "That's why they give us 15 minutes," said Lincoln. The more consequential action was taking place behind closed doors Saturday as Democrats struggled to find a compromise on a proposed government insurance plan that would compete with private insurers. Lincoln and several other moderate fashion ugg bootsDemocrats are opposed to the government insurance plan in the bill, and Reid, D-Nev., doesn't have a vote to spare in his 60-member caucus. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius joined in some discussions and several senators cited progress on the issue. There was discussion of various options, including nonprofit insurance plans administered by the Office of Personnel Management, which runs the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. "I'm optimistic that something, I'm not sure what, but something can be arrived at," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. "It's definitely going to be something that's of a nonprofit nature." Reid called the unusual sessions as he races to finish the bill by Christmas. The weekend work also allowed him and other Democrats to highlight their commitment to Obama's signature issue, arguing that Americans can't take weekends off from worrying about health care, so the Senate shouldn't, either. Republicans, determined to stall if they can't kill the bill, weren't impressed. "I think the majority leader believes that somehow if we stay UGG Classic Cardy Boots in on weekends the Republicans are going to blink. I assure him we're not going to blink," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Lawmakers went at each other over who really wanted to protect older people. Johanns said home health care agencies were being unfairly targeted in the legislation, noting that they account for 3.7 percent of the Medicare budget but would absorb 9.4 percent of the cuts to Medicare in the Senate bill. The percentage is even higher in the House version of the legislation, which passed last month. "These are truly some of the most vulnerable Americans that receive these services and the cuts are placed directly on their backs," Johanns said. Democrats said those cuts, and others to Medicare UGG Classic Tall Boots private insurance plans and providers, would reduce overpayments, inefficiency and waste in the popular program, thereby strengthening it. They noted repeatedly that AARP supports the overall cuts, and also produced a letter from the National Association for Home Care and Hospice in support. The Dec. 4 letter said the group has "agreed to do its part by reducing costs and payments in a manner that makes the Medicare home care program more efficient and less susceptible to abuse." But Democrats didn't want to let the Republican amendment go unanswered, so Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., offered an amendment stating that the bill would not reduce guaranteed home health benefits. It passed 96-0. "They're busy talking about the cuts when this actually improves what Medicare beneficiaries are going to get," said Kerry, referring to new preventive services and other items in the bill. MEDPAC, an organization established by Congress to advise lawmakers on ugg boots Medicare, has projected that home health care agencies would be overpaid by Medicare in 2009 by margins of 12.2 percent overall. There are some 9,700 companies providing home health care under Medicare. The overhaul legislation would provide coverage to more than 30 million more people over the next decade with a new requirement for nearly everyone to purchase insurance. There would be new marketplaces, lower-income people would get subsidies, the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor would grow, and there would be a ban on unpopular insurance company practices such as pulling coverage when someone gets sick. Saturday was the sixth day of debate on the legislation.

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson could lose his driver's license after police clocked him driving at 109 mph — nearly twice the posted speed limit — on a suburban Minneapolis highway last weekend. Peterson told The Associated Press on Thursday that he "got a little speeding ticket. I need to be more aware of the speed I was going and not let it happen again." Peterson was pulled over just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday while driving his BMW in a 55-mph zone on state Highway 62 — a normally busy stretch of road known as the Crosstown that connects Minneapolis with southern and western suburbs, ugg outlet Edina police spokeswoman Molly Anderson said. She said Peterson was given a citation and allowed to drive away after what appeared to be a "very routine" traffic stop. Anderson said police clocked the 24-year-old Peterson going 109 mph, but Peterson told the AP he wasn't driving that fast. "But I know it was a speeding ticket, and that's what I got issued for," Peterson said. The stop happened the night before Peterson ran for 85 yards and a touchdown in a 36-10 victory over Chicago. The All-Pro also fumbled twice, with one of them a turnover for the Vikings. Peterson said he was headed to the downtown hotel where the team stays the night before home games. He said he was not late at that point. "After I got pulled over, then I was late," Peterson said. In 2005, Minnesota lawmakers approved tougher sanctions for drivers caught at excessive speeds, and one provision requires revocation for at least six months for driving faster than 100 mph. Peterson has 21 days from the date of the citation to UGG Classic Cardy Boots challenge it in court. Sen. Steve Murphy, a Democrat, sponsored the law to send a message about irresponsible driving. "Mr. Peterson is going to be walking for a little while. That's an automatic suspension for anything over 100 mph," Murphy said. "Just because he can go 100 mph on the football field doesn't mean he needs to go 100 mph on our roads." He added, "Maybe Adrian's miscue will save the life of someone else and that's the good that can come out of this." Minnesota State Patrol Capt. Matt Langer, who wasn't involved in the Peterson stop, said whether to cite a driver for speeding or for misdemeanor reckless driving is a judgment call. Langer said it comes down to how great a risk the speeder posed to themselves or others on the road. "Any time you speed at all it's UGG Classic Tall Boots dangerous," Langer said. "But to that extreme it's just absolutely ridiculous." Coach Brad Childress downplayed any concern about Peterson's alleged high speed. "I don't know. I'd stay out of the police industry, if that in fact is true," Childress said, adding: "You got to take care of yourself. You can't put yourself in harm's way." Childress acknowledged Peterson was late to the hotel, but declined to discuss the possibility of any punishment. "He was there shortly thereafter, and as we do with everything that's in-house stuff," the coach said. Peterson, a first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma from winter ugg boots Palestine, Texas, led the NFC with 1,341 rushing yards in his rookie season with Minnesota in 2007, then led the league last season with 1,760 yards rushing. He's third in the NFL this year with 1,084 yards. Peterson has become one of the sport's most popular players, with a high national profile that includes an endorsement with Nike. He has no known prior off-the-field troubles, and he's active in the community with charity work. Peterson annually hosts a Special Olympics event at the team's practice facility, one of his favorite causes. Minnesota (10-1) plays at Arizona (7-4) this Sunday night in a matchup of division leaders.

Sin City is pinning its biggest bet ever — $8.5 billion — on a 67-acre, six-tower complex of striking hotels, gourmet restaurants, swank shops and a single casino that starts opening Tuesday in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. Many watching the high-stakes roll of the dice shudder at the thought that nearly 5,900 rooms in three hotels will be awaiting guests when CityCenter's crown jewel — the 4,004 -room Aria Resort & Casino — opens Dec. 16. That will increase Las Vegas' winter ugg boots already saturated inventory by more than 4 percent at a time when fewer visitors are coming and room prices have fallen 25 percent from last year. CityCenter's debut might pull rates even lower, but state leaders hope the complex leads Nevada out of two years of economic misery that has hit the state with record unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies. "We're in a 12-round fight. The first six rounds, you guys got beat up," Tony Alamo of the Nevada Gaming Commission told CityCenter owners MGM Mirage and Dubai World when Aria's license was approved. "We're putting all our eggs in the `grow-the-market' basket. I Air Max would be lying to you if I wasn't concerned — that's a reality," he said. "This is not just the company, it's the state." When The Mirage opened in 1989, it launched two decades of expansion that more than doubled the number of rooms in Las Vegas to some 141,000 today. A record 39.2 million visitors came to Sin City in 2007, but that dropped to 37.5 million last year as the recession kept many people away. Sin City's rapid growth came to a halt, crippling casinos and construction, the state's two largest industries. Nevada's unemployment hit a record 13.3 percent in September. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, most of about 40 projects that have been proposed or started haven't determined completion dates. Construction started on three projects that would UGG Classic Cardy Bootsadd 9,390 rooms to the Strip, but Boyd Gaming's $4.8 billion Echelon, the Fontainebleau Las Vegas and an addition at Caesars Palace are all on hold. The $3.9 billion Cosmopolitan casino-resort is scheduled to open next to CityCenter in September 2010, but it's now owned by Deutsche Bank after the developers fell into foreclosure. Phil Ruffin, who owns the Treasure Island casino-resort about 1 1/2 miles north of CityCenter, said new hotels have historically helped tourism but CityCenter is opening into unprecedented economic circumstances. "It's going to be bloody out there," the Kansas billionaire told The Associated Press. "We wish them all the success in the world because it would help the whole city of Las Vegas, but I can't think of a worse time to open up 7,000 rooms." Including condominiums, CityCenter will have nearly 6,800 units open early next year with 400 more hotel rooms planned. While marketed to high-end customers, rates for a room at CityCenter on Dec. 20 start at $129 at the boutique Vdara, $149 at anchor resort Aria and $345 at the luxury Mandarin Oriental. Ruffin said tourism likely won't improve substantially UGG Classic Mini Boots until unemployment drops nationally. Others fear that even when the economy improves, visitors won't spend as freely as they did before the downturn. CityCenter has had anything but a smooth trip to completion. In the five years from the drawing board to its final touches, its funding nearly lapsed, MGM Mirage and Dubai World fought in court, and six construction workers died. Ruffin bought Treasure Island for $775 million and took over in March, giving MGM Mirage a cash infusion to help it survive and finish building its massive complex. MGM Mirage and Dubai World each have billions in debt, and Dubai World last week asked creditors for a six-month break from payments on the $60 billion it owes creditors. MGM Mirage officials say the standstill won't affect CityCenter; the partners agreed with banks in April to fully fund and finish the project. MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said the agreement includes cross-default language that protects the company against any issues at Dubai World. The result is 18 million square feet in six soaring glass towers and a retail promenade, all built to give visitors a sense of its enormous scale. Each building has gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The modern design evokes the feel of a major city's bustling UGG Sundance II Boots downtown, in contrast with the sprawling resorts that have dominated the Strip, including an Egyptian pyramid, Venetian canals, a pirate show and a volcano. Aria has about as much casino space as the Bellagio next door and offers 15 places to dine. The rest of the complex has 12 restaurants, ranging from cafes to classic French cuisine by Pierre Gagnaire, a Michelin three-star chef opening his first U.S. restaurant. There are also 670 condominium-only units opening in January and a 400-room Harmon Hotel & Spa, though it won't open until at least late next year. There are 15 fine art installations on site, including a Henry Moore sculpture set in a quiet alcove and a large typewriter eraser by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Maya Lin, known for designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, used recycled silver to build a scale model of the Colorado River over Aria's registration desk. Jim Murren, CEO of MGM Mirage, said he felt CityCenter needed to incorporate elements found in major cities that Las Vegas doesn't have and give residents a reason to visit the Strip. "What do we have here? Where's our Lincoln Center, where's our museum, where is that environment?" Murren said. "We don't have every element that major cities have — even after this we certainly don't — but we will have that feeling, you'll get that emotion there." MGM Mirage and Dubai World hired 12,000 workers from a pool UGG Bailey Button Boots of 175,000 applicants, calling it the largest employment opportunity in the U.S. this year. However, the end of construction at CityCenter will mean about 10,000 laborers must find other projects — something nearly impossible in Las Vegas these days. CityCenter's owners now find themselves fighting for returns on a resort valued at roughly $4.88 billion as of Sept. 30, less than 60 percent of its construction cost, according to estimates MGM Mirage released last month after it reduced CityCenter's condo prices. The company told regulators Nov. 13 that 1,443 of the 2,440 condo and condo-hotel units were under contract. Competitors, meanwhile, will see if CityCenter brings more visitors to Las Vegas, then fight to get them in their casinos. "It's going to be a scramble about customers," Ruffin said. "No doubt about that." Murren said even though MGM Mirage would probably be better off financially if CityCenter were never built, its finish represents a catalyst that couldn't come at a better time. "We're at the eve of opening up something that was unimaginable this year, that will have a profoundly positive impact on our cash flows, our cross-marketing opportunities for our other properties, and on visitation and revenue to all of Las nike star Vegas," Murren said. "I believe that it couldn't happen at a better time now that we've survived the first six rounds of the fight." Alamo said that despite its troubles, CityCenter has a good chance to succeed — but needs a little luck. "Let's just ring the seventh-round bell," he said.

The survey polled a sample of 2,000 consumers and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. The survey also found large numbers of travelers accessing information digitally. Forty-one percent of those with travel plans said they use mobile devices for tasks like making reservations or getting travel information. Twenty-six percent say they have visited a travel-related company's social media fan page. And 57 percent of those with travel plans say they often read consumer-written UGG Classic Mini Bootsreviews or comments online related to travel. Among those planning to travel during the holiday and winter season, 74 percent will visit relatives or friends, 16 percent will visit a foreign country, 38 percent will spend at least one vacation doing warm-weather activities like swimming or golf, and 18 percent will take a ski vacation or do other cold-weather activities, according to the Deloitte survey. Thirty-four percent of those with travel plans are heading for historic sites or national parks, while 22 percent plan to visit entertainment parks or facilities, and 8 percent plan to make volunteer activities part of their vacation plans, the survey showed. Only 40 percent of travelers say they currently belong to at leastUGG Sundance II Boots one rewards or customer loyalty program from a hotel or other lodging facility. Adam Weissenberg, U.S. Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure leader at Deloitte LLP, said the 6 in 10 travelers who have not signed up for loyalty programs represent an opportunity for hotel companies to "build new relationships with these travelers through programs that create long-term brand loyalty and drive repeat business." Weissenberg said he believes the survey results suggest that "conditions appear to be stabilizing in the travel industry as signs of an economic recovery take hold." Arch Woodside, professor of marketing at Boston College who specializes in tourism, pointed out that the U.S. lodging industry has been able to generate a "positive cash flow with lower profits" despite the recession by "reducing prices in response to soft demand." But he said the weak economy is disproportionately affecting the travel habits of average-income households, with those travelers making UGG Bailey Button Boots fewer trips than higher -income Americans. The economy is also changing when and how often average-income Americans travel.

Federal prosecutors took steps Thursday to seize four U.S. mosques and a Fifth Avenue skyscraper owned by a nonprofit Muslim organization long suspected of being secretly controlled by the Iranian government. In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court against the Alavi Foundation, seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets. The assets include bank accounts; Islamic centers consisting of schools and mosques in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston; more than 100 acres in Virginia; and a 36-story glass office tower in New York. Confiscating the properties would be a sharp blow againstcheap ugg boots Iran, which has been accused by the U.S. government of bankrolling terrorism and trying to build a nuclear bomb. A telephone call and e-mail to Iran's U.N. Mission seeking comment were not immediately answered. Nor was a call to the Alavi Foundation. It is extremely rare for U.S. law enforcement authorities to seize a house of worship, a step fraught with questions about the First Amendment right to freedom of religion. The action against the Shiite Muslim mosques is sure to inflame relations between the U.S. government and American Muslims, many of whom are fearful of a backlash after last week's Fort Hood shooting rampage, blamed on a Muslim American major. "Whatever the details of the government's case against the owners of the mosques, as a civil rights organization we are concerned that the seizure of American houses of worship could have a chilling effect on the religious freedom of citizens of all faiths and may send a negative message to Muslims worldwide," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The mosques and the skyscraper will remain open while the forfeiture case works its way through court in what could be a long process. What will happen to them if the government ultimately prevails is unclear. But the government typically UGG Classic Cardy Bootssells properties it has seized through forfeiture, and the proceeds are sometimes distributed to crime victims. "No action has been taken against any tenants or occupants of those properties," U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said. "The tenants and occupants remain free to use the properties as they have before today's filing. There are no allegations of any wrongdoing on the part of any of these tenants or occupants." Prosecutors said the Alavi Foundation managed the office tower on behalf of the Iranian government and, working with a front company known as Assa Corp., illegally funneled millions in rental income to Iran's state-owned Bank Melli. Bank Melli has been accused by a U.S. Treasury official of providing support for Iran's nuclear program, and it is illegal in the United States to do business with the bank. The U.S. has long suspected the foundation was an arm of the Iranian government; a 97-page complaint details involvement in foundation business by several top Iranian officials, including the deputy prime minister and ambassadors to the United Nations. "For two decades, the Alavi Foundation's affairs have been directed by various Iranian officials, including Iranian ambassadors to the United Nations, in violation of a series of American laws," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. There were no raids Thursday as part of the forfeiture action. TheUGG Classic Mini Boots government is simply required to post notices of the civil complaint on the property. As prosecutors outlined their allegations against Alavi, the Islamic centers and the schools they run carried on with normal activity. The mosques' leaders had no immediate comment. Parents lined up in their cars to pick up their children at the schools within the Islamic Education Center of Greater Houston and the Islamic Education Center in Rockville, Md. No notices of the forfeiture action were posted at either place as of late Thursday. At the Islamic Institute of New York, a mosque and school in Queens, two U.S. marshals came to the door and rang the bell repeatedly. The marshals taped a forfeiture notice to the window and left a large document sitting on the ground. After they left a group of men came out of the building and took the document. The fourth Islamic center marked for seizure is in Carmichael, Calif. The skyscraper, known as the Piaget building, was erected in the UGG Sundance II Boots 1970s under the shah of Iran, who was overthrown in 1979. The tenants include law and investment firms and other businesses. The sleek, modern building, last valued at $570 million to $650 million in 2007, has served as an important source of income for the foundation over the past 36 years. The most recent tax records show the foundation earned $4.5 million from rents in 2007. Rents collected from the building help fund the centers and other ventures, such as sending educational literature to imprisoned Muslims in the U.S. The foundation has also invested in dozens of mosques around the country and supported Iranian academics at prominent universities. If federal prosecutors seize the skyscraper, the Alavi Foundation would have almost no way to continue supporting the Islamic centers, which house schools and mosques. That could leave a major void in Shiite communities, and hard feelings toward the FBI, which played a big role in the investigation. The forfeiture action comes at a tense moment in U.S.-Iranian relations, with the two sides at odds over Iran's nuclear program and its arrest of three American hikers. But Michael Rubin, an expert on Iran at the American Enterprise Institute, UGG Bailey Button Boots said the timing of the forfeiture action was probably a coincidence, not an effort to influence Iran on those issues. "Suspicion about the Alavi Foundation transcends three administrations," Rubin said. "It's taken ages dealing with the nuts and bolts of the investigation. It's not the type of investigation which is part of any larger strategy." Legal scholars said they know of only a few cases in U.S. history in which law enforcement authorities have seized a house of worship. Marc Stern, a religious-liberty expert with the American Jewish Congress, called such cases extremely rare. The Alavi Foundation is the successor organization to the Pahlavi Foundation, a nonprofit group used by the shah to advance Iran's charitable interests in America. But authorities said its agenda changed after the fall of the shah. In 2007, the United States accused Bank Melli of providing services to Iran's nuclear UGG Fluff Flip Flop and ballistic missile programs and put the bank on its list of companies whose assets must be frozen. Washington has imposed sanctions against various other Iranian businesses.
